Shouko used to be on the same volleyball team as Utsumi in high school, and volunteers to help out the Cat Clowder with restoring vacant homes. Despite knowing that Utsumi identifies and presents as male, Shouko still refers to him as "Natsumi-chan". She has a tendency to blurt out inappropriate remarks.
[Spoiler] Ultimately, Shouko sees Utsumi as someone who has a "disorder". As she is seen nudging her daughter into traditionally girly interests, despite Mai not connecting with them, it is implied that Shouko worries about Mai turning up like Utsumi. [/Spoiler]
